The University of London External Programme Laws (LL.B.)

1858-2008

The University of London has been awarding law degrees world-wide for over one hundred years.  The University of London was the first British University to award common law degrees.  Before Oxford, Cambridge and other British Universities, The University of London was the first to set up common law departments (under John Austin & John S. Mill at University College), the first to admit women to University, the first to establish the study of common law Jurisprudence in England,  the first University in Great Britain whose qualifications were not based on religious criteria, and the first to establish degree programmes via distance learning.

Today, the University of London has over 42,000 students world-wide who are registered with the University of London External Programme.  Over 12,000 students world-wide are registered with the External Programme in Laws.

Whether earned as a full time (internal) student or as an external student, the University of London law degree (and all degrees offered under the External Programme) are of equal standard and quality.  In fact, Statute 66(2) of the University of London expressly codifies this fact.  Furthermore, the General Bar Council of England and Wales fully recognize the law degree awarded through External Programme students for purposes of meeting the academic stage of legal education.

According to the University of London :

"Candidates granted degrees and other awards shall have attained the same academic standard irrespective of mode or place of study or examination.' There is only one University of London degree, and it is awarded both to students attending in London and to External students."

Many of the colleges of the University of London, such as the London School of Economics & Political Science, Queen Mary College, University College, Birkbeck College, Royal Hollaway and other colleges formulate the content, course of study and assessment for the degrees awarded by The University of London External Programme.

Additionally, for those students interested in entering the legal profession in the United States, the University of London LL.B. degree is recognized by many major ABA approved law schools in the United States - for purposes of meeting their educational requirements of Master of Laws (LL.M.) degree programs.   Many states will permit graduates of US ABA LL.M. programs to take their bar examinations.

(ICLS) is a tutorial institution devoted to helping University of London External Programme students prepare for their University of London law examinations.  ICLS is not part of the University of London; however, ICLS specializes in teaching the law subjects tested by the University of London.

ICLS is at the leading edge of educational technology in terms of offering online lectures to its students not only in the US and UK, but world-wide.  The advent of the computer and the internet have narrowed the gap between those who can study law and those who can only dream about it.

ICLS 2008 LL.B. Revision Weekend

I recently attended ICLS's review weekend with respect to my first year examinations for the University of London's LL.B. External Programme.

I feel that the review sessions provided me with an overall sense of much needed focus as I move into the final phase of my revision prior to the upcoming examinations.

Thank you ICLS for putting together such an invaluable review weekend."

ICLS 2007 LL.B. Revision Weekend

"I just wanted to take a moment to thank you very much for your wonderful lectures in Toronto this weekend.  You have made it much easier for me to begin revising for my examinations in June.  I know that it must have been an exhausting weekend, and appreciate your efforts all the more!  Your written material is excellent, and will assist me in organizing my studies.  I hope to have the pleasure of participating in a weekend next year..."

ICLS Writing Workshop Equips Students

"I just wanted to say Thank You to you and your team for executing such a productive weekend...  Saturday was very intensive and by the end of the writing session I felt confident in myself, as I learned the techniques only ICLS could have taught. I now know what the examiners are looking for and most of all I understand how to organize the vast information I have per subject. You were organized, enthusiastic and addressed relevant issues. I am looking forward to the March Seminar. Thank you once again."

ICLS INTEGRATES LIVE CLASSES

June 2006: ICLS provides live face to face legal writing workshops and selected LL.B. revision courses in addition to it's online legal programme starting in the Toronto area this fall.

According to George Pappas, ICLS Executive Director, "ICLS will provide expanded teaching without any additional cost to ICLS students.  ICLS is going to do whatever it takes to increase the value of it's legal program.  We're excited about supporting our online programme with brick and mortar learning.  What's great about this development is that all ICLS students world wide will benefit since similarly registered ICLS students will receive the same review materials from the Toronto or New York City (or other location) seminars at no additional cost.  We're also looking at other locations and hope to announce further face to face teaching for the University of London LL.B. degree course."
