Canadian Bar Admissions

Procedure for Admittance to Practice Law

The legal profession in Canada is governed by one of the 14 law societies of Canada.  In general, the education requirements to practice law in Canada may be satisfied by one of the two following pathways:

A) Obtain an LL.B. degree from an accredited Canadian law school.

B) Obtain an LL.B. from a fully accredited non-Canadian law school approved by the  National Committee on Accreditation ("NCA").

University of London External Programme Law  (LL.B.) Graduates can receive advanced standing for purposes of entering the legal profession in Canada so long as they achieve at least a  Lower Second Class Degree Result.  For an up to date comment by the Canadian National Committee on  Accreditation click here.

Candidates who have completed their coursework at the International Center for Legal Studies and have earned an LL.B. from the University of London, would fall under pathway No. B and would be required to submit transcripts of their legal education and experience, if any, to the NCA for an official evaluation. While it is not an exact science, typically the candidate may expect to take some or all of the following courses:

  • Constitutional Law

  • Evidence

  • Taxation

  • Corporate Law

  • Administrative Law

According to the Federation of Law Societies of Canada, the following factors are considered in determining the additional education required to meet the legal education requirements for the practice of law in Canada:

  • Age of the degree

  • Academic standing in the LL.B. program

  • Subjects taken

  • Undergraduate education

For example, candidates with Upper Second Class Honours should receive "advanced standing" as would a candidate with Lower Second Class Honours, though not as much.  Third Class standing or lower normally will not receive any advanced standing.

Once the NCA makes a determination on the additional courses a candidate must undertake, the candidate then has a choice of two methods to fulfill the requirements:

1. Study at an accredited Canadian Law School

2. Take a private course under the auspices of the NCA

Strategies

Many Canadians are working full-time and simply cannot afford to quit their jobs to attend a full time program.  Unfortunately, evening classes are generally not available at Canadian Law Schools.  With the International Center for Legal Studies one may obtain a first-class legal education online and earn a law degree from the prestigious University of London.  Upon earning the LL.B. the candidate may then become a practicing Canadian lawyer by following one of the above strategies and if desirable, then seek to be admitted in their own jurisdiction or elsewhere, as it is often easier to gain admission to the Bar if one is already admitted in another jurisdiction.

Applicants are advised to check with Canadian National Committee on Accreditation (NCA) for the official admissions rules.  This rules change from time to time and applicants are advised to stay current with NCA rules, especially as they pertain to their educational background.

ICLS 2008 LL.B. Revision Weekend

I recently attended ICLS's review weekend with respect to my first year examinations for the University of London's LL.B. External Programme.

I feel that the review sessions provided me with an overall sense of much needed focus as I move into the final phase of my revision prior to the upcoming examinations.

Thank you ICLS for putting together such an invaluable review weekend."

ICLS 2007 LL.B. Revision Weekend

"I just wanted to take a moment to thank you very much for your wonderful lectures in Toronto this weekend.  You have made it much easier for me to begin revising for my examinations in June.  I know that it must have been an exhausting weekend, and appreciate your efforts all the more!  Your written material is excellent, and will assist me in organizing my studies.  I hope to have the pleasure of participating in a weekend next year..."

ICLS Writing Workshop Equips Students

"I just wanted to say Thank You to you and your team for executing such a productive weekend...  Saturday was very intensive and by the end of the writing session I felt confident in myself, as I learned the techniques only ICLS could have taught. I now know what the examiners are looking for and most of all I understand how to organize the vast information I have per subject. You were organized, enthusiastic and addressed relevant issues. I am looking forward to the March Seminar. Thank you once again."

ICLS INTEGRATES LIVE CLASSES

June 2006: ICLS provides live face to face legal writing workshops and selected LL.B. revision courses in addition to it's online legal programme starting in the Toronto area this fall.

According to George Pappas, ICLS Executive Director, "ICLS will provide expanded teaching without any additional cost to ICLS students.  ICLS is going to do whatever it takes to increase the value of it's legal program.  We're excited about supporting our online programme with brick and mortar learning.  What's great about this development is that all ICLS students world wide will benefit since similarly registered ICLS students will receive the same review materials from the Toronto or New York City (or other location) seminars at no additional cost.  We're also looking at other locations and hope to announce further face to face teaching for the University of London LL.B. degree course."
